Dover – The Delaware State Police’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred earlier this morning, according to Public Information Officer Master Corporal Gary Fournier.
Fournier said on Saturday, May 22, 2021, at approximately 8:39 a.m., a 2021 Kia Forte was traveling eastbound on Fast Landing Road (SR 42) just east of the Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway (SR 1) at extremely high speed. high. approaching a moderate straight curve. Due to its high speed, the operator was unable to negotiate the turn and left the north side of the roadway, Fournier said.
After leaving the roadway, the Kia descended an embankment and into a field of grass. The vehicle continued to travel northeast where it began to turn counterclockwise, hitting an evergreen tree with the right rear. After hitting the tree, the car overturned violently, hitting several other evergreen trees as it continued northeast before coming to a stop.
As the Kia rolled over, the left rear passenger, a 13-year-old female from Dover, was improperly restrained and was thrown from the vehicle. She was transported by EMS to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital where she was treated and admitted for non-life threatening injuries.
A 7-year-old man from Dover was seated in the rear center seat and was not properly restrained, but not ejected from the car. He was transported from the scene to AI duPont where he was treated and admitted for non-life threatening injuries.
A 14 year old female Dover was a right rear passenger and was not properly restrained. She was not ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. Identification is pending notification from next of kin.
The operator, a 35-year-old man from Dover who was properly restrained, was airlifted to Christiana Medical Center where he was treated and admitted with non-life-threatening injuries.
Fast Landing Road between Meadow Green Avenue and East Denneys Road was closed for approximately six hours while the accident was investigated and cleared.
