Bernard J. Duffy

Dover – Bernard “Bernie” Duffy, 99, died peacefully on Tuesday April 5, 2022 at Hyder Family Hospice House with his loving family by his side.

He was born February 7, 1923 in Dover, NH, the son of Peter J. and Ethel (Lunk) Duffy, graduated from Dover High School Class of 1940 and resided in that area his entire life.

He was a United States Navy veteran who proudly served his country in World War II as a journeyman carpenter.

From 1950 to 1953 he was a constable with the Dover Police Service and had also worked for B&M Railroad. He enjoyed working for the New England Telephone Company where he enjoyed working on the UNH campus.

Bernie was a member of the Dover Post 8 American Legion, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Holy Name Society.

A gentle giant, Bernie loved family camping trips to Groton, Vermont, backyard barbecues with big family gatherings, and UNH Hockey. He was also very proud of his Irish heritage.

He was a faithful communicant of the parish of the Church of Saint Joseph of the Assumption where he was one of the founding members of the Church of Saint Joseph.

He is survived by seven children, Ellen Edwards of Brockton, MA, Kathryn Duffy of Brookfield, NH, Sheila Mone (Michael), Dennis Duffy (Dawn), Brian Duffy and Matthew Duffy all of Dover, and Kevin Duffy (Jean) of Manchester, many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and his dear O’Brien in-laws.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Eleanor (O’Brien) Duffy and his siblings, Ethel Davin, Thomas Burgess Duffy, Rose Parnham, William Duffy, Esther Blanchette, Peter Duffy and Robert Duffy as well as one close member of the Robert “Bumpsy” Butterfield family whom he considered another brother.

Visiting hours will be Monday, April 11, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., A Christian Burial Mass will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., Assumption St. Joseph’s Parish Church, 150 Central Ave. Interment will follow at New St. Mary’s Cemetery.
