Former Gillingham midfielder Darren Oldaker is among the first players to sign up for Welling United for next season.

Oldaker joined Welling in February to reunite with former Gills boss Steve Lovell, but his playing time chances were sabotaged as the league season was soon called off.

The National South season was suspended shortly after Oldaker arrived at Park View Road. He was in the starting lineup during the Wings’ final game of the 2020/21 season, a 4-3 thriller against Ebbsfleet United on February 16.

Oldaker left the Gills in August 2019 after agreeing to terminate his contract, leaving with 33 appearances and five goals to his name at the club. Priestfield boss Steve Evans said at the time the player needed regular football that he couldn’t guarantee.

He continued to have spells in Billericay Town and Westfield before moving to Hythe Town, where he had previously spent time on loan. He joined Welling on February 5 of last year, weeks after Lovell was appointed director.

Welling also announced that forward Dipo Akinyemi and midfielder Olu Durojaiye will remain for the 2021/22 season in National South.

Lovell’s team will host Gillingham at Park View Road for a pre-season friendly on Saturday July 10.
