You know summer is back when the attention begins to turn to drive-ins. Hot temperatures, big buckets of popcorn, and blaring movie sound on the car stereo are where it is. Much better than that little box that looked like a crappy AM radio hanging outside the window.

The first time I went to the drive-in, there was another one in Brewer on Wilson Street. I’m pretty sure it’s just a big empty field now. People my age and beyond will remember the large gray metal structure that faced the road. Horror for sure, but I saw Trading Places and Top Secret in a feature double that night. Good time.

Dover-Foxcroft is bringing back their drive-in this summer, which they still host at the Piscataquis Ice Arena. But they’re adding a little twist this year, according to Fox ABC Maine. Instead of just showing anything, and the audience only seeing what they are showing, people can now choose the movies.

People can vote in advance for three films. In partnership with the Center Theater in Dover, people can go to the Center Theater website and vote for the films there. This way everyone has a say in what is shown. It looks like other movies will be showing as well. Classics like Shrek, Footloose, Austin Powers, etc.

The first movie chosen by viewers will air on June 25 and scheduled twice a month for the rest of the summer. I’m telling you, the drive from Bangor to Dover-Foxcroft on Route 15 is beautiful. It might be worth the trip, just to get out of town and do something different. Who is with me?
