Secret Invasion is one of the most anticipated upcoming projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; pick up years after the events of Captain Marvel, the Skrulls have infiltrated the highest levels of government. Along with the return of old MCU characters, a new character appears played by Emilia Clarke (game of thrones and Terminator: Dark Fate); while Disney and Clarke have kept the details of her role a secret, Deadline reports that Emilia Clarke could play Abigail Brand in Secret Invasion.
The article recalls that during the trailer for the series, Emilia Clarke arrives in Secret Invasion as a spy with powers, which seems normal for the MCU, and there are a number of characters she could play. However, the trailer is labeled “This is the Beginning” and “Abigail Brand,” which is as close to confirmation as we’re likely to get as to what Clarke’s character will be in the upcoming series.
While it might seem like an arbitrary name to the uninitiated, the many Marvel Comics faithful will not only recognize the name, but also understand what its appearance means for the future of the franchise.
Abigail Brand is a half-human, half-alien who is the child of a human mother and an alien father; while she has a half-brother who is a furry, green-skinned alien, one of his most prominent attributes is the mutant gene she inherited from her mother.
His mutation grants him increased durability; she survived direct hits to her torso from a high-powered laser and tactile pyrokinesis, meaning she can burn through almost any metal just by touching it. Although technically a mutant, she doesn’t always work with the X-Men. In fact, she’s much better known for her work with another organization, the one Emilia Clarke could use to alter the course of the MCU in Secret Invasion.
SWORD (Sentient World Observation and Response Department) is another government organization dedicated to protecting Earth from extraterrestrial and interdimensional threats. While SHIELD spends its time dealing with dangers on the ground, SWORD spends its time orbiting the planet and defending against an invasion.
Emilia Clarke’s Mark becomes the agency’s commander at some point and is attacked during Secret Invasion. The attack leaves her ship crippled, she boards one of the Skrull’s ships and frees Reed Richards from captivity.
The revelation that she’s a character similar to Nick Fury as the director of an obscure organization could signal a changing of the guard, with Samuel L. Jackson and Colbie Smulders handing over the reins to a new group of secret agents.
It could also mean that, although Reed Richards has been recognized in the MCU with Dr Strange and the Multiverse of MadnessEmilia Clarke could present the 616 version of Reed Richards in Secret Invasion, ushering the Fantastic Four into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If Marvel goes this route, it could be the MCU’s most influential project since. Marvel’s Avengers in 2012.
In addition to Emilia Clarke as Abigail Brand, Secret Invasion will include Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) banding together with other MCU veterans in Maria Hill (Colbie Smulders) and Everette Ross (Martin Freeman) to fight the villain they can’t see.
