It’s time for our K-entertainment segment where we take a look at the latest issues and trends in Korean entertainment.
Today, we’ll be discussing the latest from the K-pop scene, especially how BTS won at the Billboard Music Awards for the 6th consecutive year.
We will also discuss this year’s Cannes Film Festival which kicked off today.

For this, we are joined by our essential film critic Jason Bechervaise in the studio with us. Good evening Jason.
And also Kim Young-dae, music critic and ethnomusicologist via Skype. Thanks for joining us.

So first, let’s start with K-pop.
1. (YOUNGDAE) BTS won three trophies at this year’s Billboard Music Awards.
They have now won at least one Billboard award for six consecutive years and, in fact, now have the most Billboard awards of any band in history.
It’s not just among Korean acts, but globally. As a fellow Korean, I have to say I’m so proud of them. How do you interpret this? What factors do you think are behind such a feat?

2. (YOUNGDAE) And South Korean girl group aespa have been included in Time magazine’s 2022 Next Generation Leaders list, becoming the second K-pop group to do so after BTS. It comes as the band put on an eye-catching performance at this year’s Coachella festival.
What do you think of their chances of expanding even further in America?

3. (YOUNGDAE) Recently, K-pop singer AleXa won the first-ever American Song Contest, a Eurovision spin-off.
AleXa beat out nine other artists, including Grammy winner Michael Bolton.
She became the first time a K-pop artist won a large-scale audition in the United States.
So who is Alexa? And what kind of performance did she put on for her to win?

4. (JASON) Turning now to the film industry, the Cannes Film Festival kicked off today, for the first time in three years. Two Korean films were invited in the festival’s main competition category. Can you tell us what they are and how do you expect them to work?

5. (JASON) Alongside them, “Squid Game” star Lee Jung-jae’s debut film “Hunt” will also be shown. In total, three films will be screened, it seems like a lot. As a film critic, why do you think these films were chosen?

6. (YOUNGDAE) How about you, Youngdae? What do you think is the reason for the popularity of Korean films at Cannes?

7. (JASON) In 2019, Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite featuring Song Kang-ho won the festival’s highest honor. This year, Song was again invited to the event for the 7th time, and all eyes are on his ability to win Best Actor for the film The Broker. What are your thoughts?

8. (JASON) Well good luck to Song… As far as local theaters go now, more and more people are coming back to watch movies in theaters as the distancing measures have been lifted.
Lately, Marvel’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” hit the box office and, as of Monday, has already sold nearly 5 million tickets.
What do you think is the reason for its popularity in Korea?

Extra: (JASON) What other movies hit the box office in the second half of the year? What are you looking forward to? (Jurassic World, etc.)

All right, time to wrap up our discussion, Jason and Young-dae thank you for your ideas.
