COLUMBUS – For the fifth time in the 2022 season and the third week in a row, the Dover football team have missed a game.
The Crimson Tornados’ two-point conversion was halted by Columbus DeSales on Friday night, as the Stallions beat Dover 21-20 in a Division II, Region 7 first round playoff game.
Friday’s game was similar to the teams’ regular season meeting Sept. 30 at Crater Stadium, when DeSales won 23-16 in three overtimes.
The score was tied 6-6 at the end of regulation play. Dover (5-6) got the ball first in overtime and scored on JJ Barton’s 8-yard run and a two-point conversion pass from Tyler Stevenson to Matthew Gigax.
The Stallions (7-4) tied the game, then took the lead in the second overtime on a 20-yard pass from PJ Noles and Niko Kreuzer and the extra kick from Joey Bangert.
The Tornadoes scored on Mitchell Martin’s 16-yard run and went for a two-run try.
Barton led Dover with 78 yards rushing on 22 carries, while quarterback Ben Hamm added 28 yards on 12 attempts and he completed 12 of 18 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown, to Stevenson, giving Stevenson the Tornadoes a 6-0 lead. Stevenson had five receptions for 34 yards.
Dover’s season was marked by narrow defeats. The Tornadoes have lost five games by seven points or less, including four in overtime.
DeSales advances to play Federal League champion Lake on Friday.
Canfield 27, New Philadelphia 10
CANFIELD – The Quakers (6-5) played Canfield (9-1) much stronger than the final score would show.
Indiana rookie Broc Lowry led the Cardinals to a Division III, Region 9 first-round victory. Lowry led Canfield with 86 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, and he completed 11 of 17 passes for 118 yards.
Danny Inglis scored a pair of touchdowns as the Cardinals rallied from a 10-7 second quarter deficit.
Keaton Fauzel’s 4-yard pass to Konner Tetzloff was New Philadelphia’s only touchdown, and Nathaniel Demuth threw a 48-yard field goal and an extra point.
Canfield, the No. 2 seed, will host No. 10 Aurora (8-3) next Friday.
Garaway 48, Smithville 7
SUGARCREEK — Ethan Miller rushed 21 times for 145 yards and scored three touchdowns as No. 2 seed Garaway (11-0) set up a rematch with Ridgewood in the second round of Division V, Region 17.
Logan Yoder added 40 yards and a rushing touchdown, and he completed 4 of 8 passes for 16 yards as the Pirates took a 27-0 lead after one quarter.
Garaway will host Ridgewood (8-3) next Friday at 7 p.m. The Pirates beat Ridgewood 29-0 in Week 10.
Ridgewood beat No. 7 seed Berkshire 21-0 on Friday night.
