Overall winner of 2020 Laurence Hartwell – Beam trawlers disembarking at the night fish market

Proposed by the Shipwrecked Society

A national maritime charity is asking photographers to submit images of the sea for its annual competition honoring Britain’s proud maritime heritage.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society would like amateur and professional photographers to submit images that capture the essence of the UK’s enduring connection to the sea – including its merchant ships, fishermen, coast, ports and harbors.

There are plenty of possibilities in Kent as the waters sweep the county from the tides of the Whitstable Estuary around the eastern point of Margate to the Port of Dover and along the south coast to Folkestone and Dungeness.

Given the impact of the coronavirus on the country’s travel plans, the charity is encouraging people to browse their photo albums and submit old and new images.

The big winner will win vouchers worth £ 500 for photographic equipment.

Caroline Walker – Heugh Breakwater (winner of the Coastal Views 2020 category)

In addition to beautiful seascapes and coastal images, the association wishes to receive photos of people enjoying leisure activities at sea or around the coast.

Once again, the competition will be judged by a prestigious panel of experts including image editors from The Sunday Times, The i and The Telegraph.

Ian Butler – Mylor Harbor (2020 Ships and Wrecks Category Winner)

Another member of the jury will be the Executive Director of the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society, Captain Justin Osmond RN.

He said:

“The past year has been a difficult time for all of us and especially for key workers in the maritime industry who have kept the country afloat with much-needed imports from abroad.

“Our industry often suffers from being out of sight and out of mind, but it is truly essential to sustaining us as an island nation and allowing us to go about our day-to-day business.

“The photography competition allows us to showcase and celebrate our relationship with the sea and after receiving a record number of entries last year, we are more excited than ever to see each other’s fantastic and unique images during this summer. “

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society supports fishermen, merchant seamen and their dependents who suffer financial hardship, whether due to accident, illness, unemployment or retirement after a life spent working at sea .

In 2020, a £ 1million Covid response fund was set up by the company, to directly help members of the maritime community who have been affected by the pandemic.

The registration deadline is Tuesday August 31st. To participate, submit your photos here, via email, post, or through their new Instagram channel (@ShipwreckedMariners) using the hashtag # SMSPhotoComp2021.
