Hundreds of people visited a new fruit and vegetable stand that has opened at a Folkestone station.

SJ Fruits, run by Stephen and Thereza Moore, first moved into the Folkestone West car park on Saturday.

They will be there every Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering local and exotic fruits and vegetables.

They hope that if the business is successful, other traders will join them in time.

Mr. Moore said: “Saturday was brilliant. We had about 500 customers, which is the same number we get in our Thursday market, which we have been managing for eight years.

“The feedback has been great. I hope it gets even busier next week.”

SJ Fruits already trades in Paddock Wood on Thursdays and in Tenterden on Fridays.

In Tenterden, they are joined by bread and cheese stalls and other vendors such as fishmongers, and hope to attract a similar offering to Folkestone.

This is the second time that SJ Fruits has moved to the neighborhood.

Last year, during the lockdown, the father of three, Mr Moore, started trading from the Golden Valley parking lot in Sandgate.

Week after week, he says he’s out of products, with customers lining up for up to 30 minutes as early as 8 a.m.

At the time, Mr Moore, of Maxton, near Dover, said he obtained permission to trade in the municipality-owned parking lot over the phone.

But the stand was later closed by the council, which said the stand had been set up without permission.

He is now happy to resume his activities in Folkestone.

He said: “I am the third generation in my family to provide fruit and vegetables to Folkestone.

“It was such a success when we were at Sandgate. And now we are back in Folkestone.

“We really meet everyone’s needs. We buy it and then sell it. We know directly where we are buying our products.

“We don’t claim to cultivate it.

“We are honest about our products.

“I sell around eight tonnes of fruit and vegetables a day, which is more than Aldi or Lidl. Our customers know that our products are of good quality.

Customers were delighted to see the stall return.

One said on Facebook: “So glad you’re back, we missed you. “
Another said: “I got up and got a great value bag of fruit for the kids.”
