There are some great places to stay in Kent, from bustling towns to relaxing beaches, the county has its fair share of great stays.

But not everyone has their dream vacation in the Garden of England.

Reviews are a great starting point when thinking about booking a hotel, and sites like TripAdvisor can make it easier for you to decide where to stay.

Users can rate hotels after their stay, rating them on a scale of one to five stars.

And TripAdvisor users certainly don’t hold back when it comes to criticizing Kent hotels.

KentLive has compiled a list of the ten “worst” hotels in Kent according to TripAdvisor reviews.

Please note that only hotels with 20 or more reviews were included in our ranking of the ten ‘worst’ hotels in Kent. These rankings were correct at the time of publication on August 22, 2021.

Auberge Alma Cafe and Express, Dover

Alma Cafe and Express is the worst hotel in Kent according to TripAdvisor traveler reviews.

The Folkestone Road Youth Hostel in Dover received 133 reviews, of which 73 rated it as ‘terrible’ – the worst rating you can get on TripAdvisor.

One customer titled his review “The best thing to do is to avoid this joint.” “

They went on to say that the hotel had “dirty smelly rooms” and “broken windows”.

Another customer crowned it “the worst hostel ever” and urged fellow TripAdvisors users: “don’t stay!”

People even went so far as to label it “scary,” with one reviewer claiming it looked like a horror movie set.

The Croft, Ashford

The Ashford Croft Hotel on Canterbury Road is rated only two and a half stars on TripAdvisor.

While the hotel has since closed and is slated to reopen as a restaurant and bar this summer, critics have not held back.

One customer boldly said, “I wouldn’t let my dead goldfish stay here.”

The economy hotel in Kennington has 69 “terrible” reviews, compared to just 19 “excellent”.

A visitor said his friend chose to stay in his van because it was nicer than the room, and they described the land as a junkyard.

Another reviewer even went so far as to describe the hotel as “worse than Fawlty Towers”.

Dover Backpackers, Dover

Dover Backpackers has only two and a half stars on TripAdvisor.

A visitor came to the site to complain about the noise level in the hostel.

They said: “The music lasted until 4 am as the rooms are directly above the bar.

“Even after the music stopped, people screamed and screamed right outside the window until 5 am.”

Another guest added: “The accommodation was in terrible shape.

“However, the worst of the ordeal was yet to come! The music started downstairs (heavy rock music) at 9 am and got louder as the night wore on.”

They ended their exam by stating that they would have preferred to sleep in their car.

The hostel has a majority of “terrible” reviews, with just a handful of “excellent” and “good” ones.

TripAdvisor users warned that the stench of The Star Inn in Edenbridge was so bad they couldn’t stay longer than five minutes.

One customer said: “Terrible – we stayed for 5 minutes and decided we couldn’t deal with the smell.

“We lost the payment we made and went elsewhere.”

Likewise, another TripAdvisor user took to the site to complain about the smell that permeated the hotel and anticipated the decor in the process.

They said, “I was fooled by the stale smell of urine in the room, the dirty yarn carpet, and the 1970s decor!”

The Kings Head Hotel on High Street in Rochester is another establishment with more negative than positive reviews.

TripAdvisor users only gave it two and a half stars, criticizing it for having “filthy facilities”.

One TripAdvisor user said: “I was taken down grubby hallways with sticky rugs and a ramp so dirty I had to wash my hands.

“The bathroom trash can still had used sanitary products. The noise levels were horrible and the curtains weren’t wide enough to close properly. Not acceptable.”

The Tunbridge Wells Retreat in London Road has pretty mixed reviews on TripAdvisor, but only got three stars in total.

While older reviews seem to praise the hotel, more recent TripAdvisor users have berated it for an alleged lack of cleanliness.

One commenter said that “love has been lost” in the hotel.

They added: “The stains on the carpet, cushions, walls, curtains were nicotine yellow.

“With just a little effort this could be lovely, but for the price, be grateful for a dry and warm room.

“We even had a free pair of socks left by the previous guest (used) in the closet.”

This guesthouse in Wingham only received two stars in total, with a large majority of ‘terrible’ ratings.

Customers focused their reviews on a lack of cleanliness and a horrible smell that permeated the hotel.

A TripAdvisor user said: “The comforter was extremely stained and dirty – disgustingly!”

Another added: “Feels the old dog tired and exhausted.”

However, they continued to say that they found the hosts quite charming and suggested that with a little care this could be a great B&B.

Riverview Lodge, Rochester

Number of reviews: 38

While reviews of Riverview Lodge in Rochester were mostly positive when it came to the staff, TripAdvisor users were quick to criticize the hotel itself.

One reviewer said: “The first impression was the smell of dust. It was because it was everywhere; stuck to the top of the walls, above and inside the cabinet, and trapped in dirty cobwebs in every corner of the room.

“There was a dilapidated wingback chair inside that looked like it had been thrown from a nursing home.”

They added, “Upon removing the comforter, the bottom sheet looked quite clean, and encouraged by that, I made the decision to check the mattress.

“Wrong move. It looked like an 18th century map of Africa, with old, overlapping brown spots.”

Another customer described his stay as an “experience in Munster”.

The budget Prince of Orange hotel in Gravesend has received fairly good reviews recently, but the majority of TripAdvisor users have portrayed the property in a negative light.

One customer claimed that if he could give a negative rating on TripAdvisor, he would have.

They added, “The room smelled of musk and the linens were really old.”

The reviewer claimed they left immediately and found another place to stay.

Salisbury House on Salisbury Road in Dover has a total of three stars in total.

Customers have taken to TripAdvisor to criticize the property’s cleanliness, with one user claiming to leave within ten minutes of seeing the hotel’s condition.

They added: “The bed seemed ready to collapse and the laundry had not been washed.

“The last drop was when a massive spider crossed the room and hid under the bed, my husband looked under the bed to find it and was horrified to see three old suitcases covered in dust, surrounded by flies. dead bodies, human hair and general dirt.

“We left immediately and wasted our money but I would have slept in the car rather than staying in this dirty place.”
