With Maidstone’s Alessia Russo making headlines with her heroic goals this week, the Lionesses of England are now one game away from making history.

Russo took center stage in their 4-0 Women’s Euro semi-final success against Sweden as the 23-year-old scored a sensational backheel goal.

With England already 2-0 ahead and, after Russo saw a close-range shot saved by Swedish keeper Hedvig Lindahl, the Manchester United striker chased the ball and produced a backheel which hit the keeper for England’s third.

It was a goal from substitute Russo – her fourth of the tournament despite not appearing in any matches so far – which garnered plenty of attention on social media and even managed to earn praise from former England striker Ian Wright.

Russo and co will now face Germany in the final at Wembley on Sunday (kick-off 5pm), with Beth Mead, Lucy Bronze and Fran Kirby also having been on target in Sarina Wiegman’s side’s semi-final victory .
